On May 31, 2024, the DATASPACE 4.0 Final Event unfolded in Brussels, Belgium, marking a significant milestone in the journey of the Data Space 4.0 industry community. This consortium has been at the forefront of defining a shared approach to manufacturing data spaces, focusing on secure data sharing and the development of data-driven business models.
The event aimed to celebrate this achievement and share the journey and outstanding outcomes, after two years of dedicated work and collaboration by the DATASPACE 4.0 consortium.
The event was not just a celebration of achievements but also a strategic meeting point for CSA partners and an avenue to forge connections. The lessons learned were earmarked for integration into the UNDERPIN project, ensuring the continuity and expansion of data space innovation. Additionally, it was an excellent opportunity for face-to-face interactions with partners from the sibling project SM4RTENANCE, fostering collaboration towards a common goal: creating an industry data space for manufacturing.
A single, comprehensive data space is essential, where the manufacturing sector can collaborate to develop practical applications for data sharing in manufacturing.

Insightful Discussions, Strategic Outcomes and UNDERPIN at the table of DATASPACE 4.0 Final Event
The day was packed with presentations and discussions covering the technical pillars of the data space framework, deployments, and industrial agreements. A special roundtable titled “Data in Manufacturing, EDIHs, SMEs & Regions” provided a platform for in-depth discussion on pivotal topics. Key speakers, including Mr Aristotelis Ntafalias from Motor Oil Hellas (UNDERPIN project coordinator), presented the objectives and current status of the UNDERPIN project, enriching the dialogue with their insights.
The atmosphere was charged with positivity and collaborative spirit. Mr Yves Paindaveine, a Senior Expert at the European Commission, emphasized the critical need for a unified data space, stating, “A single, comprehensive data space is essential, where the manufacturing sector can collaborate to develop practical applications for data sharing in manufacturing.” This sentiment echoed throughout the event, highlighting the collective drive towards integrated and practical solutions in data space technology.

The event also featured a hybrid roundtable, provoking a lively exchange of ideas on manufacturing innovation assets from various perspectives including EDIHs, SMEs, and regions. These discussions underscored the diversity and richness of viewpoints, vital for shaping future directions in manufacturing data spaces.
Concluding a Milestone Project
Reflecting on the two-year journey, the DATASPACE 4.0 project showcased its accomplishments, from conceptualization to realization. The event not only marked the successful conclusion of this project but also set the stage for the next steps in data space development for manufacturing.
A major outcome of the DATASPACE 4.0 project was the contribution to the Data Spaces Support Centre‘s Blueprint 1.0. This blueprint serves as a guide that simplifies setting up manufacturing-specific data spaces, facilitating easier collaboration and secure data sharing among manufacturers.
A Step Towards Continued Collaboration
The discussions, presentations, and networking at the event have undoubtedly laid a robust foundation for the future of data spaces in manufacturing. The outputs from the project, including the European Data Space 4.0 Alliance, the Data Space 4.0 Canvas, the directory of existing manufacturing data space assets, and the consolidated set of reference Smart Data 4.0 Models are significant contributions that will help in the development of the UNDERPIN Data Space and similar initiatives forward.
The DATASPACE 4.0 Final Event was not just a culmination but a beacon for ongoing and future collaborations, driving forward the vision of interconnected and secure data spaces in manufacturing.
