UNDERPIN at the Semantic Interoperability Workshop and EBDVF 2024

Big Data Value Forum

Last week was an eventful one for the UNDERPIN project, marked by significant contributions to two key events focused on data spaces and semantic interoperability.

On October 1, 2024, the 3rd Workshop on Semantic Interoperability in Data Spaces took place in Budapest, alongside the European Big Data Value Forum 2024 (EBDVF). The first workshop was organised by our esteemed partners, technical experts, Semantic Web Company and Ontotext. The UNDERPIN project was proud to be one of the workshop’s supporters, emphasizing our commitment to advancing semantic data interoperability.

The workshop centered on:

  • Discussing various approaches for semantic interoperability within and between data spaces, including ontologies, SHACL shapes, and JSON schemas.
  • Raising awareness of cross-domain semantic interoperability concepts.
  • Bridging the gap between these concepts, particularly in terms of standardization.

Presentations and Contributions of the UNDERPIN partners

Martin Kaltenböck from the Semantic Web Company (SWC), one of the event’s organizers, opened the workshop with a presentation on the critical role of data spaces in enabling effective data sharing and integration.

Robert David (SWC) presented a paper titled Raising the Role of Vocabulary Hubs for Semantic Data Interoperability in Dataspaces, co-authored with Petar Ivanov and Vladimir Alexiev from Ontotext.

This paper delves into the critical challenge of achieving semantic data integration in dataspaces. It emphasizes the role of the Vocabulary Hub service as part of the IDS RAM, a repository for ontologies and vocabularies. The paper outlines how this service can provide richer metadata descriptions and integrate semantic descriptions directly into datasets, facilitating easier data querying.

This approach aligns closely with the goals of the UNDERPIN project, which aims to enable seamless data-sharing environments across the manufacturing industry.

During the EBDVF 2024 (held from 2 to 4 October), Martin Kaltenböck delivered two presentations. Also sharing a summary of key insights from the discussions during the workshop, providing valuable perspectives on the future of data space interoperability. His presentations highlighted the ongoing challenges in achieving seamless data integration across diverse platforms and the potential solutions offered through collaborative efforts like UNDERPIN.

Deep dive on Semantic Interoperability in Data Spaces

“Semantic interoperability ensures that the precise (format and) meaning of exchanged data is preserved and understood throughout exchanges between parties. This challenge intensifies when considering semantic interoperability between data spaces across different sectors, each with its own unique vocabularies and ontologies.”

Other members of the UNDERPIN consortium also attended the EBDVF, focusing on networking and identifying new cooperation opportunities. This participation helped establish connections with industry leaders and potential partners, furthering UNDERPIN’s mission of creating a robust and sustainable data space for the manufacturing sector.

Looking Ahead

Our engagement in these events is crucial for spreading the word about UNDERPIN. And not only that. It is also about raising awareness about the importance of data spaces, underscoring the value of semantic interoperability in data spaces and demonstrating how our work is a step forward for the industry. This is just the beginning. Many more events are in the line up as part of our Road Show across Europe, aimed at promoting and showcasing the project to our target groups.

The UNDERPIN project remains committed to creating a future where data can be shared securely and meaningfully across sectors. So, stay tuned as we continue to share more insights from our journey toward building a more interconnected, data-driven future for the manufacturing industry.
